Description

From Statistics to Solutions:

"The statistics are alarming. According the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), children and adolescents with mental-health conditions are at a higher risk of using drugs than other youth. Additionally, as many as six in 10 substance young people who are using drugs and alcohol are also dealing with a mental-health issue such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-harm, eating disorders and more."

Featuring Carol Falkowski

Carol Falkowski is the former director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division of the Minnesota Department of Human Services, the state agency responsible for the administration of public funds for prevention and addiction treatment services in Minnesota. She has been part of a nationwide drug abuse surveillance network of the National Institute on Drug Abuse since 1986. She was director of research communications at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation for a decade.

Falkowski has served in an advisory capacity to numerous Federal, State and private agencies including the FDA, the Department of Justice, the Rand Corporation, and the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Her comments have been sought by many media outlets including USA Today, the New York Times, the BBC, National Public Radio, CNN with Anderson Cooper, and the Today Show.

She is currently CEO of Drug Abuse Dialogues -- a Twin Cities-based training and consultation organization, and considered one of Minnesota's foremost experts on drug abuse.

This conference will consist of four different panel discussions. Each discussion will include experts from a range of fields; including Medical, Prevention, Legal, Law Enforcement, Pharmaceutical, Legislative, Treatment and Education. During the panel discussions each speaker will focus on tools to bring about solutions to the overwhelming needs we face while working with young people struggling with co-occuring disorders. This conference is about leveraging and learning through partnerships. Join us for an impactful day.

Panel Discussions:

What are they thinking? Drug Abuse and the Brain.

Substance use is particularly damaging for young, developing brains. Fortunately, discoveries in neuroscience are leading to new insights and understanding. During this panel discussion, we will explore the how the brain develops and how this correlates with substance use and co-occurring disorders.

Co-Occurring Disorders and Addiction

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Often time’s substance abuse isn’t the only struggle a young adult is faced with. This panel of experts will identify and discuss the correlation between co-occurring disorders and addiction.

Treatment and Recovery

One-size doesn’t fit all – especially when it comes to treatment for young adults with substance-use and co-occurring disorders. This panel of experts will examine a variety of settings such as short-term, long-term, in-patient and out-patient. They will also discuss different programming approaches and treatment models.

Re-Entry into Society

Treatment is only the first step in recovery. This panel of experts will shed light on the challenges that young people may face while re-entering into society, they will also discuss the importance of utilizing resources and surrounding yourself with a supportive network.

Registration Includes: 5 CEU credits and lunch.

When registering please also select your respective CEU category.
