The Homewise Livability Speaker Series, launched in 2023, is a community education program that features local and national experts discussing how housing markets become unaffordable and exploring strategies to manage development for greater affordability, sustainability, and livability. Our 2025 Santa Fe series will take place monthly from July through October.

Join EMNRD (Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department of the State of New Mexico) Deputy Secretary Ben Shelton for an illuminating conversation on decarbonization—the urgent work of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by shifting to cleaner energy, improving efficiency, and reimagining how we power our homes and communities. This session will explore practical strategies for accelerating the energy transition, especially in the places where we live and work.

Deputy Secretary Shelton will share insights into New Mexico’s statewide decarbonization strategy. He will also offer concrete ideas for how communities like Santa Fe can support low- and moderate-income households in making their homes more energy-efficient, resilient, and climate-friendly.

As Santa Fe undertakes its first major update to the general plan and land use code in decades, this timely session invites us to consider how smart, inclusive development can help build a more sustainable, equitable future—locally and statewide.

Ben Shelton is the Deputy Secretary at the New Mexico Energy, Minerals & Natural Resources Department. Prior to that he was the Department’s General Counsel since 2023 when he joined EMNRD from the non-profit sector. He graduated from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College in 2011 and received his Bachelors in Ecological Studies from Seattle University.

Ben Shelton es el Subsecretario del Departamento de Energía, Minerales y Recursos Naturales de Nuevo México. Antes de eso, fue el Asesor Jurídico General del Departamento desde 2023, año en que se incorporó a EMNRD procedente del sector sin fines de lucro. Se graduó de la Escuela de Derecho Northwestern de Lewis and Clark College en 2011 y obtuvo su licenciatura en Estudios Ecológicos en la Universidad de Seattle.
