From Obligation to Opportunity: Accessibility in Canvas

By Professional Development for Faculty

Overview

Faculty gain seven key Canvas accessibility skills to make courses navigable, perceivable, and inclusive for all learners.

Building on the foundational knowledge from Session 1, this session focuses on applying accessibility practices directly within Canvas, the college’s learning management system. Faculty will learn the seven core skills essential for creating accessible course content: using proper headings, creating descriptive links, writing effective alt text for images, designing accessible tables, ensuring sufficient color contrast, structuring content with lists, and making video/audio accessible with captions and transcripts. Through live demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants will explore how each skill supports student access and aligns with WCAG’s POUR principles. By the end of the session, faculty will have practical strategies to apply immediately to their Canvas courses, enhancing both compliance and student learning experiences.
