From Laya to Loom is an intimate evening of Indian classical music, unfolding on September 11 in a close, listening-centered space, with sounds provided by Third Space Music.

Rooted in the ancient traditions of raga and tala, this gathering invites you to slow down and witness music as a living, breathing form, woven in real time between artist and audience. "Laya" (rhythm) is our guide, and through it, we journey toward the subtle textures, or "loom," of sound and silence.

Third Space is a Brampton-based collective founded by tabla players Vijai Kumar Singh and Pavan Singh Ubhi, dedicated to preserving and promoting Indian classical music. As volunteers with a deep passion for this art form, they recognize the lack of opportunities for large-scale Indian classical music presentations in Brampton despite its diverse and sizable South Asian population. Their mission is to fill this gap by curating immersive musical experiences that foster cultural appreciation and community engagement.

Inspired by Ray Oldenburg's concept of "Third Spaces"—informal public places where people gather beyond home and work—Third SpaceArts seeks to revive the tradition of intimate baithaks (musical gatherings).Their previous event, Moksha, was a success, demonstrating the demand for such cultural experiences. Their upcoming event will honour the legendary Ustad Zakir Hussain and explore the strings of the subcontinent. More than just performances, their events cultivate a shared, soulful journey where melody (sur) and rhythm (taal) create deep, meaningful connections.

Through workshops, concerts, and community outreach, Third Space nurtures a vibrant artistic ecosystem, offering a sanctuary where audiences and performers alike can celebrate South Asian musical traditions. Their work is not just about preserving music; it’s about fostering a sense of belonging and cultural continuity.
