From Flax to Fabric

By Pontyclun Environment Group

Overview

Join us for a hands on learning experience to find out how fabric is made from flax!

Cat Lewis started growing flax in 2020 on a small plot in Global Gardens community garden project, Cardiff. Her aim is to encourage and support the community for growing and making sustainable local linen fibre and to bring back heritage craft skills lost to industrialisation.

It began as a 3m x 3m plot planted with flax seed; the next year it grew into a little field at St Fagan’s Museum of Welsh Life.

Many have joined in and learned to grow, harvest and process the flax plant to linen fibre, and onto using it in spinning, cording, weaving and papermaking.

Join us for a hands on demo and talk and begin your own flax-making journey!
