Description

The Center for Documentary Studies and the Southern Documentary Fund are pleased to present a free screening of In the Executioner's Shadow.

What would you do if someone you love was raped, tortured, or murdered? How would you seek justice? In the Executioner's Shadow takes us into the rarely seen world of death row with Jerry Givens, who conducted 62 executions for the State of Virginia and is haunted by how close he came to executing an innocent man. It follows survivor Karen Brassard, who was severely injured in the Boston Marathon bombing, and her deep moral conflict while she attends the trial. It defies our perception of justice as Vicki and Syl Schieber ultimately choose to fight for the life of their daughter's rapist and murderer.

Maggie Stogner (Director, Producer, Writer) has over 25 years of filmmaking experience, and is the owner of Blue Bear Films http://www.bluebearfilms.com, a professor of film and media arts at American University, an executive member of WIFV, and an Emmy judge. Recently she directed, produced and wrote “Gold Mountain", a broadcast documentary about Chinese in the Old West. Also, Maggie produces films and immersive media for world-touring museums exhibitions. She is a former Senior Producer of National Geographic’s award-winning series, EXPLORER.

Richard Stack (Co-Producer) is an Associate Professor at American University, Washington DC. Rick has been writing on social justice and capital punishment for over 25 years. Recent books include "Dead Wrong: Violence, Vengeance, and the Victims of Capital Punishment" (2006) and "Grave Injustice: Unearthing Wrongful Executions" (2013), which have helped reframe the national debate.

About Fresh Docs
Fresh Docs is SDF’s free, monthly, work-in-progress screening series. These screenings give SDF filmmakers an opportunity to show their work fresh from the edit suite, and receive constructive feedback on story, structure, and characters from a diverse audience. As a result, not only do our artists make better films, but SDF grows documentary audiences by engaging them meaningfully in the creative process. This season is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the North Carolina Arts Council.

SDF would like to thank our Fresh Doc Sponsors:
