Freelancer Skills Workshop: The Creative Facilitator’s Playbook
Overview
Freelancer Skills Series
Culture Sheffield and Fair Collective bring you a ten part training series which gives freelancers the chance to build new skills, grow their networks, and explore opportunities for income, collaboration and visibility within the city’s vibrant cultural and visitor economy.
Each session will be focused on a different topic relating to your creative freelance practice, based on the feedback and suggestions from Sheffields freelance community.
Workshop 5 - The Creative Facilitator's Playbook. [In-person workshop, Gut Level - Chapel Walk]
Discover the art of creative facilitation in this energising, hands-on workshop. From creative warm-ups to visual storytelling you'll learn about and experiment with different techniques in a supportive space. Alongside building practical skills you'll also connect with other creative freelancers and small business owners - sharing ideas, swapping experiences and growing your network as you learn.
We'll explore how facilitation skills can open new income streams and strengthen your existing creative practice, whether you're running workshops, leading collaborative projects, or working with community groups.
Some of the questions and topics we'll consider:
- Essential facilitation skills every creative should know
- Designing engaging creative activities and exercises
- Reading the room: managing group dynamics and energy
- Tools for visual facilitation and collaborative creativity
- Adapting your approach for different audiences and contexts
- Building confidence as a creative leader and workshop facilitator
- Pricing and positioning facilitation services
- Creating psychological safety for creative risk-taking
- Handling challenging moments and keeping groups on track
- Using your creative practice to enhance facilitation skills
Whether you're curious about adding workshops to your offering or want to improve your collaborative project skills, you'll leave with a toolkit of techniques, new connections, and the confidence to facilitate creative experiences that truly engage and inspire.
This workshop will be led by Valerie Monti Holland, a sociodramatist and applied theatre practitioner whose work in prisons began a fascination with the systems of organisations, groups and teams and the roles we take within them. She believes that understanding the positions of hope, power and empathy are key to creating an environment where people feel safe enough to play.
