Freedom Discussion and Drinks with Timothy Garton Ash

Overview

Join us for a special event with historian Timothy Garton Ash, reflecting on the 1989 revolutions and Europe’s transformation since.

Join us for a special event with Timothy Garton Ash, one of the world’s leading historians of modern Europe and a longtime observer of our region. A professor at Oxford and an eyewitness to the transformative events of 1989, Garton Ash vividly chronicled those revolutions in his acclaimed book The Magic Lantern: The Revolution of ’89 Witnessed in Warsaw, Budapest, Berlin, and Prague. His newest work, Homelands, offers a sweeping look at Europe’s recent history and its evolving identity. With his deep, ongoing engagement—he has spoken recently on developments such as the Polish presidential elections—Garton Ash brings rare insight into both the past and present of Central and Eastern Europe.

He will join us for a conversation reflecting on the revolutions he witnessed, the trajectories our countries have taken since, and the questions that lie ahead. The format will include a brief talk followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A.
