Learn how to play with and support improvised songs. We’ll focus on giving singers strong backing with chords, rhythm, and structure, then explore underscoring scenes and creating mood. Open to musicians of any level interested in making up songs with improvisers.
About your facilitator:
Casey Watts (he/him) is a long-time teacher, including: musical improv, dancing, web development, and technical skills. Casey can play Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance on at least 15 instruments — and he owns an instrument in every color of the rainbow. Imagine someone walking down the street singing, dancing, and blowing bubbles - that’s Casey!
What is Musical Improv?
Musical improv is like a game where you and your friends make up songs right on the spot. You don’t need any prepared lyrics or music; instead, you create them as you go. It’s a mix of acting and singing, where everyone collaborates to create fun and surprising songs that fit the moment. It might sound tricky, but with the right mindset, simple guidelines, and a bit of practice, it’s easier than it looks. Think of it like creating a first draft—using patterns like adding a chorus and taking turns helps you shape your spontaneous songs. This event is free!
Who Should Attend?
This workshop welcomes all writers, improvisers, songwriters, and musical theater enthusiasts—whether you’re into musical theater, pop, rock, folk, or any other genre. Just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to experiment with new song making games.
By attending, you agree to Highwire Improv's Policies and Code of Conduct.
