Free Virtual Backyard Composting Workshop

A free virtual home composting workshop will be offered on June 7, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Practically anyone can learn to compost or improve their existing compost techniques by following some basic steps taught in the workshop. Free instructional materials on home composting will be provided via email and upon request.

The workshop will be led by Todd Sutton, an environmental expert with over 30 years of experience. Todd has appeared on national television, including the Discovery and History channels, and has educated thousands of people on waste prevention, recycling, and composting.

Good Reason to Attend

In California, food waste presents a significant environmental challenge. Organic materials decomposing in landfills generate about 20% of the state’s methane emissions - a potent greenhouse gas more than 28 times as effective as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. To combat this, California enacted SB 1383, targeting a 75% reduction in organic waste disposal and the recovery of at least 20% of currently discarded surplus edible food by 2025. Composting yard trimmings and food scraps helps mitigate methane emissions, enriches soil, conserves water, and supports environmental health.

Composting your yard trimmings and food scraps is easy, adds nutrients to your yard and garden, kind to our environment and good for you too! Save money, save water, and conserve natural resources. With proper maintenance, a compost pile can produce nutrient-rich compost in approximately three months, enhancing your garden's vitality.

All Contra Costa County residents are encouraged to participate, and others are welcome to join as well. This live online event will be hosted via Zoom, with the link provided upon registration. Join us to gain valuable composting skills that benefit both your garden and the environment. For more information on composting and recycling, visit http://www.cccrecycle.org/.
