A Joint Talk on the Two Most Exploited Species of Animals
And What is Being Done About it

Join the Veg Society of DC (VSDC) on Saturday, Oct 28th as we once again visit Greenfare Organic Cafe in Herndon, VA for another in the VSDC NoVA Speaker Series. This time, Karen Davis and Mary Finelli will give a joint talk on poultry and sealife, the two most exploited species of animals and what is being done to stop it.

KAREN DAVIS, PhD is the Founder and President of United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl including a sanctuary for chickens in Virginia.

MARY FINELLI is president and founder of Fish Feel, the first organization devoted to promoting respect and compassion for fishes as sentient beings.

Bios:

KAREN DAVIS, PhD is the Founder and President of United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl including a sanctuary for chickens in Virginia. She is the author of Prisoned Chickens, Poisoned Eggs: An Inside Look at the Modern Poultry Industry; More Than a Meal: The Turkey in History, Myth, Ritual, and Reality; The Holocaust and the Henmaid’s Tale: a Case for Comparing Atrocities; A Home for Henny; and Instead of Chicken, Instead of Turkey: A Poultryless “Poultry” Potpourri.

KAREN DAVIS has chapters in Sister Species: Women, Animals, and Social Justice; Experiencing Animal Minds: An Anthology of Animal-Human Encounters; Defining Critical Animal Studies: An Intersectional Social Justice Approach to Liberation; Animals and Women: Feminist Theoretical Explorations; Critical Animal Studies: Thinking the Unthinkable; Critical Theory and Animal Liberation; Terrorists or Freedom Fighters: Reflections on the Liberation of Animals; and Meat Culture (2016). Her article “Disengaged Journalism” will be published in Critical Animal Studies: Towards Trans-Species Social Justice in 2018. Mary Finelli is president and founder of Fish Feel, the first organization devoted to promoting respect and compassion for fishes as sentient beings. She is also chair of the Save the Rays Coalition. Mary is a long-time animal rights activist with a B.Sc. in Animal Science. For several years she produced Farmed Animal Watch, a weekly online news digest sponsored by numerous animal protection organizations. Mary co-wrote a chapter of In Defense of Animals: The Second Wave, and she has worked with numerous animal protection organizations.
