New!
This training is a new APOST offering, as it's part of the Social & Emotional Learning Youth Work Methods Workshops recently developed by The Forum for Youth Investment | The Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality (https://forumfyi.org/weikartcenter/workshops/).

This workshop is a pre-requisite for two other workshops:

  1. Engaging Youth in Supported Struggle workshop (which is being offered on June 11)
  2. and Facilitating Problem Solving.

Workshop Description

As programs work to facilitate social-emotional (SEL) skill building for young people, youth workers must think about their readiness to facilitate cognitive skill building with young people. Cognitive skills are the core skills the brain uses to think, learn, remember, problem-solve and pay attention. Cognitive development is the continuing development of those skills from birth through adulthood.

In this introspective workshop, youth workers will take time to identify their own strengths, needs, interests, and constraints related to learning and cognitive development. Additionally, participants will strengthen their understanding of how their background, experiences, privilege, bias, and/or discrimination have affected their attitudes toward learning and their expectation about other’s learning.

Participants will leave this session with practical skills that can be implemented immediately to support youth initiative and problem-solving.
