Improv Foundations

This six-week course is designed to introduce and reinforce the basics of improv comedy with an emphasis on collaborating with new people and having fun! We’ll focus on the building blocks of improv, what makes a great scene, creating characters, and working together to create improvised scenes and short form game play. If you're new to improv, looking to refresh or reinforce your skills, this class is for you. This course also serves as a foundation for advanced classes. Each class features warm-ups, skill exercises and improv game play. Course content is updated each cycle exposing students to new exercises and games.

The class culminates in an optional team performance at our Winter Show & Jam on Friday 2/28. This fun night will feature performances by local comedians, improv players and you making your debut supported by your team. Ask anyone who has performed on our stage, it is always a great night of fun & laughter.

If you have ever been curious about improv now is the time to give it a try :) It's great fun and you will be surprised how much you look forward to classes each week. We aim to laugh and learn together :)

Classes are weekly Tuesday 630pm. Prompt arrival is a courtesy to your team. We will have classes on 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11 and 2/18 with make-up, if necessary, or optional rehearsal on 2/25.

Instructor: Diana Scott Shields

Diana is the Founder and Executive Director of Scranton Improv & Comedy where she teaches, produces and performs. A native of Los Angeles, Diana launched Scranton Improv to create more opportunities for laughter and learning in NEPA. Diana took her first improv class in NYC years ago when working a corporate job and seeking an opportunity to laugh and play and she has been an improv advocate ever since. In addition to creating a structured, fun and safe place to laugh and learn, improv teaches valuable communication, collaboration and confidence building skills. Beyond sharing her passion for improv and comedy, Diana is an ICF certified executive and life coach, positive psychology consultant and a graduate of UC Berkeley.

Launched in 2019, we offer classes, workshops, drop-in improv jam sessions, performances and unique events. We welcome actors, non-actors, seasoned pros and beginners to a world of possibilities where individuals will learn about acceptance, teamwork and the benefits of an action mindset. Play, laughter and learning are what we are all about.

Education Policy

Class is for ages 18+. Attending class weekly is a big part of the experience of taking courses with us. Through weekly instruction and practice, we build community and connections creating the best possible experience for our students as they grow their confidence and skills.

Refund Policy

We will not credit, prorate or give partial refunds. If there’s a strong chance you will miss more than two classes, we recommend registering for the course during its next offering. If you have signed up for a full course and need to cancel, you must email us at info@scrantonimprov.com a minimum 72 hours in advance of first class to receive a full refund.
