About this Event

This event is sold out. Click here to be notified about the next offering of Foundational Open Science Skills, currently planned for Spring 2021.

Learn about open source technology, full lifecycle data management, and creative collaboration skills for your computational research and curricula development.

Presented using the QUBES online teaching platform, you will become a part of a Mentoring Network that will help you use this time effectively to develop leading educational skills and set yourself and your research apart, with expert mentorship and colleague support. Level-up with new skills in scientific reproducibility, data accessibility, and advanced analytics that meet and exceed the growing expectations of funding agencies, publishers, and academic institutions.

Our small workgroup format includes weekly check-ins and homework assignments to help you keep on track with your research or curriculum development goals. Flexible times allow you to attend either the Tuesday (11am PT) or Thursday (1pm PT) two-hour session every other week (or both if you’d like extra learning opportunities and support!).

Our curriculum will include hands-on time for developing or customizing your curricula or research project(s), so make sure to bring your own data or lesson plan concept to develop with assistance from your instructors.

Coursework begins July 28, with a two-week rolling enrollment period through August 10. Late enrollees may catch up on missed sessions via videorecordings.

What will you learn?

  • FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles and tools for managing the data lifecycle
  • How to build and use container technology to streamline your work
  • How to scale out your computation from laptop to cloud to HPC
  • Development best practices, including continuous integration
  • Interactive collaborative tools such as GitHub for research and teaching
  • Best practices for writing successful, competitive research proposals, including a Data Management Plan that meets NSF guidance
