Forced displacement continues to be a challenge faced by the world’s most marginalised people, especially in global south countries, as a result of unliveable conditions: climate breakdown, armed conflict, food insecurity and more.
Many root causes of forced displacement stem from historic and current activities of the global north while discourse in the UK often dehumanises those seeking refuge. There’s a real opportunity—and responsibility—for us to use our platforms to raise awareness about the systemic root causes that drive both the need for our work overseas and the displacement of people seeking refuge here. How can we help our communities in Scotland better understand these global injustices in a way that encourages greater empathy and creates a more welcoming environment for refugees and asylum seekers? Within this, how do we use our platforms to collaborate with and amplify the voices of asylum seekers and refugees who want to share their messages about the need for global justice and solidarity?
Join us and the Scottish Refugee Council for a 2-hour workshop with lived experience speakers to explore our relationships and responsibilities as organisations with migrants and the ways in which we can utilise our platforms and networks to uplift and amplify migrants in meaningful and impactful ways.
This session will cover:
- Definitions and inclusive language
- Key reasons people flee with lived experience speakers
- The responsibility of those in the global sustainable development sector in highlighting these injustices locally and encouraging active understanding and participation in our communities
- The refugee and asylum process and barriers
- How you can meaningfully include and collaborate with those who have been forced to flee in your organisational work and wider communities/networks
- Breakout rooms to consider ways in which your organisation could take action to stand in solidarity with displaced people
