Riddles in the Hills

January 26, 2018

View from the Acropolis

2008/2012, Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan, 35mm to digital, 16m

Triggered by the invitation to produce a new work for Project Art Centre in Dublin, we followed the trail of a Celtic Tiger to Berlin’s Pergamon Museum. Here, an ancient monument to the fatherland with a sculpted frieze commemorates a battle against a Celtic tribe in Asia Minor. With a proposal to reconnect this monument to its place of origin in contemporary Turkey, we approached the Pergamon Museum. However, the museum did not want to participate in an art project that addressed the fact that the monument originates from somewhere else. It was afraid “this would stir the debate on repatriation”, something they were “not interested in”.

The museum’s refusal resulted in the group of works Monument to Another Man’s Fatherland which all explore the absence of the original. The first two parts reconstruct the battle scene from images and texts that we found in books. For the third part we visited the site that the battle scene originates from. Filmed on location in black-and-white on one of the last batches Kodak Plus-X, the 35mm film explores the view from the hill, alternating between two axes of perception. Sometimes it is absorbed by absence, lingering on abundant vegetation that has overgrown debris, at other times, it follows the surrounding inertial landmass. Recorded on a windy day, clouds project shadows and trees sway their branches.

Painter and sound composer Arnout Killian interpreted the inert landmasses, shadows, wind and the swirling grain into a soundtrack created with the Nord Modular Synthesizer.

Arrábida

2017, Tinne Zenner, 16mm to digital, 16m

Arrábida is a 16mm film centred on the production of landscape and concrete in the Arrábida Natural Park. It merges footage from the park with 3D animation of the topographic landscape as an equal analogue layer. Há só uma terra. There is only one earth.

Cannonball River

Peter Buntaine, 2017, Digital, 6m

The first thing they tell media when you get permission to film at Standing Rock is to not film prayers or ceremonies. Soon you realize though, that prayer is the primary activity of the resistance camp. More than that though; prayer is woven into the day-to-day life of the water protectors so thoroughly that one can barely turn on the camera without capturing holiness. How to film the unfilmable, what’s left to film then: sacred water, stolen treaty lands, the morning. All the while the sounds of surveillance, helicopters and drones, echo across the plains.

Folds of Existence

Programmed by Lorenzo Gattorna and Mary Ancel

A screening series of contemporary moving image that mediates the precarious boundaries between public space and personal psyche. Ranging from the meditative and transcendent to the cacophonous and debaucherous, these layered realities attempt to reclaim timeworn ideologies, made manifest via social network dynamics, contested geopolitical histories, formulaic mass entertainment, ecstatic virtual imaginings and oscillating collective projections. This powerful compilation of works challenges the currency and potentiality of events, and points towards alternative aesthetics and modes of existence. The programs presented include short-form, feature-length, single-channel and installation-based works.
