Overview

A 4-week journey into the magic of flow through improvisation, movement and singing together.

Join a committed cohort of singers for a 4-week dive into the building blocks of vocal improv.

Wednesdays 7-9 PM | Feb 11 - March 4
& a Sunday Retreat 10-2 PM | March 1

Flow Choir, born out of Circle Choir, is a 4-week dive into the joyful and freeing practice of vocal improv*. Rather than learning existing songs, singers will be facilitated through games and processes that explore the question "what is the music this room of people can make?!" Each week, participants will be lovingly led through a "flow," an uninterupted group vocal improv experience weaving together familiar games and structures that bring a room of individuals into a cohesive, yet ever shifting flow of music. In addition, each week we will dive into some foundational skills of collabortive vocal improv, supported by theory and small group practice, which will build our capacity to flow, together.

Led by Milly Roberts, co-founder of Boston-Area Singing Circles, these sessions will be highly informed by her study of Música do Círculo from Brazil, Bobby McFerrin's CircleSinging, and her own adventures of uninterupted group singing within highly resonant spaces.

Who: Anyone (ages 16+) who is ready for a playful and brave 4-week singing journey is welcome. Whether you were boo'd off the Karaoke Stage or part-time busker, this series offers the structure to free our inner voice, together.

*Can I flow without improvising? In fact, yes! While there will be many invitations for generating your own musical part within a flow, you always have the option of joining another existing musical part in the moment. However, the data tells us, the longer you spend in flow, the easier the improv comes.

When: Wednesdays, 7-9 PM | Feb 11 - March 1
& 1 Half-way, Half-day Sunday Retreat* 10-2 PM | Feb 22

*This half-day retreat will be joined by Jordan Mudd and the Song Catching Series members for a joint day of emergent music making practices. This longer session will allow us to deepen our improv practice, explore questions and ideas, and feel the joy of a larger group flow.
