The mission of Flamencos United is to cultivate awareness and appreciation of Flamenco music, dance and culture through classes, performances and participatory events that enrich the cultural diversity of Idaho. After ten years of sharing the art of Flamenco in Boise and throughout the Northwest via her performance group ShimiTree, Director Stephanie Sanchez, aka Stephanie Laishy, decided to expand her community-building efforts and form Flamencos United. In addition to offering unique Flamenco events and classes, the artists and staff of Flamencos United have begun to develop plans for an innovative Flamenco festival to be hosted in Boise: the North American International Flamenco Festival (NAIFF).
A native of Boise, Idaho, Stephanie Laishy is the lead singer and principal dancer for Flamencos United. Stephanie frequently tours as a soloist and teacher in the Northwest and Western U.S. Flamenco communities. A highlight of her career was an invitation to be the stage manager and guest dancer with the Jerez, Spain-based performance group Familia Bermudez in 2013 & 2015 at the Obwalden Cultural Festival in Giswil, Switzerland. Her mastership comes from a deep connection with her Hispanic roots as well as her respect for and dedication to her teachers: award-winning artists La Chiqui de Jerez (singer), Maria del Mar Moreno (dancer), Antonio El Pipa (dancer), and Los Hermanos Tota (rhythm/voice).
Stephanie Laishy and her partner Luis de la Tota, a renowned percussionist and lyricist from a prominent Flamenco family in Spain, preserve the traditional way of teaching Flamenco: from master to apprentice. In live performances, Flamencos United offers students opportunities to share choreographies as well as improvised dance, a key element of Flamenco culture. In addition to local masters, apprentices are guided by visiting artists such as Antonio El Pipa, a highly acclaimed choreographer and Flamenco dancer from Jerez, Spain, and the newly-appointed artistic director of Flamencos United.
