Synopsis

What instructional and motivational methods are most often used today yet have been thoroughly debunked by multiple research studies as ineffective - and in some instances as actually harming learning? In this session, Richard Clark will describe each of the five, provide examples, briefly summarize the evidence for why they do not support learning and point out evidence for those that actually damage learning. In addition, he will describe a large scale study in a major state university indicating that a majority of faculty currently teaching college students are unaware of the evidence and so use these failed methods.

Attendees will gain:

  • A description and example of each of the five failed though popular methods— Multitasking, Learning Styles, Digital Natives, Discovery Learning, and Extrinsic Motivation,
  • A research-based explanation of why each does not work and more evidence-based methods that have replaced them,
  • Proven explanations of those that damage learning, and
  • Access to a major study of university faculty awareness and use of the debunked methods.
