Overview:
Jeff discusses his 45-year career, the nonprofit he directs at ethicaltraveler.org, and the
30th Anniversary Edition of his best-selling 1995 book The Size of the World.
Jeff is best known for informative and entertaining travel narratives — including
Shopping for Buddhas and Snake Lake — and for creating the first travel blog on the
World Wide Web. He has been reporting on social, environmental, and political change
around the globe since 1979, when he served as a volunteer in a refugee camp on the
Thai/Cambodian border. In 1983/1984, he lived in Kathmandu, Nepal, on a Rotary
Foundation Journalism Fellowship and reported stories from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, and
Thailand.
In 2003, Jeff co-founded ethicaltraveler.org, a nonprofit dedicated to human rights, social
justice, environmental stewardship, and “Empowering travelers to change the world.”
Jeff will be introduced by CSUMB Executive-in-Residence Kelly O’Brien. Jeff will
discuss the arc of his career, how the landscape of travel has changed since his overland
around-the-world journey in 1993/1994, and his current work with Ethical Traveler.
A gifted storyteller whose solo shows “Strange Travel Suggestions” and “108 Beloved
Objects” have won critical acclaim, Greenwald brings his unique and insightful
perspective to subjects such as “Why travel?”, how to travel mindfully, and why we
should visit countries — primarily in the developing world —that support best practices.
Jeff loves audience interaction, so the microphone will be opened for your comments and
questions!
