Overview

An online film screening about Jews in space!

In just 30 minutes, "Fiddler on the Moon" finally answers the question that has plagued scientists, theologians and comedians for millennia: Will Judaism survive in space?

Starring Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jewish astronauts Jeffrey Hoffman and Jessica Meir, and a quorum of rabbis and researchers, the short documentary film covers the Jews who've ascended into the atmosphere, how Shabbat morphs in space and what travel across the universe means for Judaism. The film has been nominated for a Critics Choice Documentary Award for Best Short Documentary.

You're invited to this special JTA screening and Q&A event, which will include:

  • A full online screening of the 30-minute film
  • An online conversation afterwards featuring the film's directors, Seth Kramer and Daniel A. Miller, and Dr. Sheyna Gifford, a participant in the longest Mars simulation in U.S. history

All registrants will receive a recording of the Q&A portion of the event, but not the film.

So join us on Dec. 7!

About the speakers:

Dr. Sheyna Gifford is an aerospace researcher and rehabilitation physician. She had the privilege of being on the medical operations team for the historic AstroAccess parastronaut parabolic flight of 12 disabled scientists, veterans, students, athletes and artists. Dr. Gifford is the founder of Womxn in Aerospace Medicine, a STEM mentor and educator, professional science communicator and simulated astronaut who has logged 380 days in service over two missions: HI-SEAS IV, the longest space simulation in U.S. history, and HERA VI, a simulated mission to Mars-crossing asteroid Geographos.

Seth Kramer and Daniel A. Miller are two of the founders of Ironbound Films and the Emmy Award-nominated co-directors of "Fiddler on the Moon: Judaism in Space." Headquartered in an old inn on the Hudson River opposite West Point, Ironbound creates documentaries for theaters, television and the web. Their documentary "Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel" won eight film festival awards.
