Please join us for our first ever virtual Region 8 – wide G318 workshop! This workshop will provide guidance on developing or updating your local hazard mitigation plan to meet the requirements of Title 44 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) §201.6 and §201.7 for FEMA approval and eligibility to apply for FEMA Hazard Mitigation Assistance grant programs. This workshop covers the local hazard mitigation plan requirements, such as the planning process, risk assessment, and mitigation strategy and will have a strong focus on developing solid mitigation project ideas.

During the workshop, you will hear from local communities, state representatives, and FEMA planners from across Region 8. We will share stories and resources to equip you with practical approaches and examples for how you can engage in and implement effective planning to reduce long-term risk from natural hazards and disasters. Upon successful completion of this workshop, you will be able to define hazard mitigation and the benefits of mitigation planning, develop or update a local hazard mitigation plan, and identify resources and guidance available for mitigation planning and plan implementation into mitigation projects.

Schedule

The workshop is broken up into four modules that cover the stages of mitigation planning. Each module will have two session options, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and participants may attend the session that works best for them. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend one session from each of the four modules to complete the full workshop.

Please note the morning and afternoon sessions for each module will have the same information.

Module One: Creating Interdisciplinary Teams for a Successful Planning Process

• Afternoon Session: Tuesday, March 23rd, 1:00 – 4:00 pm (MT)

Module Two: Assessing Risk and Summarizing Vulnerability

• Morning Session: Thursday, March 25th, 8:30 – 11:30 am (MT)

• Afternoon Session: Thursday, March 25th, 1:00 – 4:00 pm (MT)

Module Three: Writing an Effective Mitigation Strategy

• Morning Session: Tuesday, March 30th, 8:30 – 11:30 am (MT)

• Afternoon Session: Tuesday, March 30th, 1:00 – 4:00 pm (MT)

Module Four: Maintaining and Implementing Your Plan

• Morning Session: Thursday, April 1st, 8:30 – 11:30 am (MT)

• Afternoon Session: Thursday, April 1st, 1:00 – 4:00 pm (MT)

*This course has been approved for 12 CECs (3 per module) and 12 CMs (3 per module).

If you would like a certificate of completion, the State of Colorado has offered to issue certificates for those who are interested. To obtain a certificate, you will also need to create an account and register via CO.TRAIN in addition to the Eventbrite registration. Please also check with your State’s STO to ensure they will accept Colorado’s certificate.

Audience

Anyone in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming involved in the development of their local hazard mitigation plan, including local government and tribal officials, emergency managers, land use planners, engineers, and floodplain administrators. This course is also open to those involved in the development of other local plans and want to learn more about hazard mitigation planning. We encourage personnel involved in comprehensive planning, capital improvement planning, and/or the development/administration of land use regulations to attend.
