Join El Tímpano for a brownbag webinar on how to combat misinformation among immigrant communities.
The Trump administration’s anti-immigrant policies have sown uncertainty, fear, and misinformation among Bay Area immigrant communities. In early 2025, rumors—later debunked—about ICE agents showing up on public transit caused some immigrants to stay home from work and fear sending their children to school. Uncertainty about policy changes has kept many from receiving health services, or applying for CalFresh for their children.
This wave of panic, uncertainty, and misinformation is having the intended effects of causing immigrants to retreat from civic engagement, miss out on social services, and even consider self-deportation. When gone unchecked, it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle: fear makes people vulnerable to disinformation, which leads to more fear, and so on.
For four years, El Tímpano—a civic media organization designed with and for Latino and Mayan immigrants—has trained Bay Area immigrants on how to recognize dis- and misinformation. In this webinar, designed for community leaders, nonprofit and government staff, educators, and other trusted messengers, we’ll share key takeaways from our workshop, leaving you and the communities you serve better informed and more empowered to navigate uncertain times.
