Fay Victor will give a lecture on how she determines the “things” she wants to say in her musical presentations as a composer, lyricist, arranger and bandleader. How do the parts come together? What goes into these decisions? The times in which we live perhaps call for more focused messages from musicians who perform on stage to captive audiences. How can artists share with and inform those that listen to them? This lecture will talk about her experiences with communicating messages and discuss how budding artistic souls can do the same.

Called “artistically complete” (New York Times), vocalist/composer Fay Victor hones a unique vision for vocalists’ role in jazz and improvised music. Victor has released nine critically acclaimed recordings as leader and has performed with musicians such as Randy Weston, Roswell Rudd, Nicole Mitchell, and Archie Shepp, to name but a few. Her most recent release with her SoundNoiseFUNK project is Wet Robots (ESP Disk, July 2018). Performance highlights include those at The Museum of Modern Art (New York), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), Kölner Philharmonie (Germany), De Young Museum (San Francisco), Symphony Space (New York), and Bimhuis (Netherlands). Victor was the 2017 Herb Albert/Yaddo Fellow in Music Composition, and she is also a 2010 MusicOmi Fellow. In October 2019, she will be a featured artist in the Jason Moran Performances at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. She is currently on the faculty at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.
