MONITORING OF ELKHORN/LAS DELICIAS PROJECT

The Altar Valley Conservation Alliance's (AVCA) Elkhorn/Las Delicias (Elk/LD) Project showcases planning, installation, and monitoring of watershed restoration practices in ephemeral arroyos and associated uplands and tributaries in a flash flood dominated landscape of the Altar Valley. This project tells the story of collaborative conservation in action through each phase of planning, installation, monitoring and evaluation. Details about the project are available on this website. The project site encompasses approximately 1,500 acres and bridges two neighboring ranches: Elkhorn Ranch and the Las Delicias Ranch. The project was installed in 2012.

After installation, AVCA has monitored the site twice annually, maintained the structures and road, and conducted educational and outreach activities at the site. Students and professionals have volunteered their time to monitor the site every year. This Fall 2025, we would like to invite you to learn more about monitoring practices and how AVCA monitors the Elk/LD Project. This workshop will be supplemented by the opportunity to join AVCA in conducting our annual photo monitoring of the Elk/LD Project.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

  • Learn more about practical long-term inventory and monitoring of rangelands, and more specifically restoration projects.
  • Encourage participants to connect with other students and professionals in the field of rangeland management or similar fields.
  • Provide an opportunity for real-time and hands-on monitoring experience.
