The Drag Performance Class, which was first launched in early 2021 and is part of BAX’s Practice Lab, focuses on developing drag characters that expand what it means to be a drag queen, king, thing, in between or beyond what has been seen. Through group games, writing prompts, discussion, and solo and collaborative movement exercises, participants give themselves permission to express the full range of who they are—and can be—while releasing narratives about how they “should” move, express, or dress based on inherited gender norms. They experiment with the tools of pantomime, clowning, lip sync, caricature, structured improv and intuitive movement to build towards in-process drag performance acts. While this class is focused primarily on performance skills, they touch upon what goes into making a drag act including: makeup, costumes, creating a musical track, movement choreography and technical production choices.

Theydy Bedbug (they/them) is a drag creature, teacher, writer, and the dad joke of Brooklyn drag. They have been deemed “MAGA Right’s Worst Nightmare” by their mentor, trans icon, Kate Bornstein, for their work as a drag educator for all ages. A bug about town, they’ve been profiled by THEM, The NY Times, and (soon) Rolling Stone. They have performed and produced in venues such asThe Signature Theatre, Lehman College, SVA, Barnard College, Triskelion Arts, Gibney Dance, The Knockdown Center, The Stone Church, The Kraine Theater, House of Yes, BAX, The Stonewall Inn, The Brick, The Flea, The Tank, Pioneer Works, Google NY, FIT, VICE Headquarters, UCB, BAM Fisher, The Hangar Theater, Chelsea Music Hall, National Sawdust, Coney Island Sideshows by the Seashore, JACK among countless other venues in New York and beyond. Their performances combine campy drag, compelling characters, and narrative poetry to reclaim their body, queer audiences, and reckon with belonging. They believe that access to spaces of genderful play in performance and creation is a step toward collective liberation.
