Driving After Concussion: Making the Case for Evidence-Based Recommendations

Driving is a highly complicated activity that requires the timely interaction of visual, motor, and cognitive skills, which are commonly impaired by concussion. It is not surprising that recent evidence shows that patients with concussion cross the centerline more frequently and present with less vehicle control, both risk factors for motor vehicle crash.

Despite emerging concerns over post-concussion driving, only 44% of patients with concussion reduce their driving at any point and postconcussion driving is not addressed in most position statements. Athletic trainers play a pivotal role in managing driving recommendations, but only provide recommendations to 57% patients after concussion.

Apply gradual return to driving protocols in various clinical scenarios
