The Montgomery County Commission for Women Presents: Fall 2021 Introductory Self-Defense Seminar

About this event

This S.A.F.E. seminar (Self-Defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange) will be conducted over Zoom for your safety and will include learning physical skills from the safety of your own space! This introductory seminar provides teen & adult women of all fitness levels with information that may reduce their risk of exposure to violence and introduces them to the physical aspects of self-defense. This pandemic-adapted S.A.F.E. seminar includes:

• videos, discussion, and planning skills for reducing personal safety risks

• a 40-minute experience learning a sample of Rape, Aggression, Defense (RAD) physical self-defense techniques

• a 13-piece full color student folio with safety information every woman should know (mailed to you following the seminar)

This one hour session will be offered five times:

October 13, 7:00- 8:30 pm

October 28, 7:00 - 8:30 pm

November 23, 7:00- 8:30 pm

December 7, 7:00- 8:30 pm

December 16, 7:00- 8:30 pm

I've signed up. Now what? All registered participants will receive the Zoom link the week of the scheduled class.

Do I need fitness or martial arts experience? Techniques can be done with power by women of all ages and fitness levels. No previous experience is required.

Is this for women only? Yes. This class is for women only. The seminar for men is not currently being offered by the Commission for Women. If you are interested in the men's class, please call 240-777-8300.

Can children participate? Young women ages 13-17 may register, with a registered female adult.

How do I prepare for an online self-defense class? We know that self-defense could be necessary no matter what you are wearing! We do require athletic footwear to minimize the chance of sprained ankles and injuries. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move around in at home. You may want to have a water bottle for hydration.

How will I know if a class session is cancelled? In case of a class cancellation, participants will be notified by e-mail.

How can I contact the organizer with questions? You can email any questions to oyin.thompson@montgomerycountymd.gov

Who teaches the class? The instructor is Holly Solano, a RAD-certified self-defense instructor in women’s basic, aerosol defense, keychain defense options, and SAFE (BPD, ADO, KDO, SAFE). She has shared RAD skills with a variety of ages and groups groups in six states. Holly is also a workshop facilitator for ONELove on relationship abuse prevention, with JCADA as a Choose Respect safe dating seminar facilitator, and a proactive social bystander instructor with BITB.

Please note the following policy prior to signing up for the class: Disruptive Behavior Policy

It is the policy of The Commission for Women to maintain an environment free from intimidating, demeaning, abusive or disruptive behavior which is contrary to a safe environment.
