Event description
Fall 2019 Speaker Series/Urban Education Colloquium: Drs. David Forbes (CUNY) and Ronald Purser (San Fran State U) discuss their new books.

About this Event

Mindfulness: Adjustment or Transformation?

Mindfulness, rooted in Buddhism and now a secular practice, has exploded in schools, corporate and government organizations, and in psychotherapy and health care. But does mindfulness as practiced help us transform ourselves and society or mindlessly reinforce the individualist neoliberal status quo?

In this talk, David Forbes (CUNY) and Ronald E. Purser (San Francisco State) will discuss their new books (Forbes: Mindfulness and Its Discontents: Education, Self, and Social Transformation--Canada, Fernwood; Purser: McMindfulness: How Mindfulness Became the New Capitalist Spirituality--London, Repeater). They challenge the way institutions under neoliberalism practice mindfulness and argue for an emergent critical, social mindfulness that can contribute to a more evolved and just society.

David Forbes is Associate Professor Emeritus in the Urban Education Doctoral Program, Graduate Center, CUNY. He taught School Counseling at Brooklyn College for nineteen years and wrote Boyz 2 Buddhas: Counseling Urban High School Male Athletes in the Zone (Peter Lang 2004) about his experience practicing mindfulness with a Brooklyn high school football team. This fall he is teaching the course, "Issues in Urban Education: Critical Introduction to Mindfulness" in the MALS program. He has written on and consults with K-12 educators about pivoting from neoliberal to transformative integral social mindfulness practices in schools.

Ronald E. Purser is Professor of Management in the College of Business and the Educational Doctorate in Leadership program in the College of Education at San Francisco State University. The author of many articles, his scholarship currently focuses on mindfulness in organizations, and how Buddhist psychology and Buddhist social theory can inform social change and transformation. He is on the Editorial Board of Mindfulness (Springer) and is an ordained Zen Dharma Teacher in the Korean Zen Taego order of Buddhism.

Ron and David co-edited the Handbook of Mindfulness: Culture, Context, and Social Engagement (Springer 2016) and co-lead the podcast, The Mindful Cranks.

This event will be held in room 4202, the Urban Education lounge.

Light refreshments will be available.
