About this event

2025 is a year shaped by political precarity and heightened pressure for our movements for liberation. As our groups convene to make decisions about tactics, budgets, and plans, we believe that how those meetings are facilitated can have a critical impact on both our outcomes, and the group’s culture. With skillful facilitation, we can unlock sharper strategy, deeper trust in our groups, and more precise focus in our formations.

Our flagship 3-hour online Facilitate for Freedom Fundamentals Training lays the groundwork for how anyone facilitating a meeting can make choices that guide the group towards our most liberatory values. Through dynamic storytelling and real meeting examples, this training introduces two of AORTA’s facilitation pedagogy principles: remove barriers to full participation and the practice of principled disagreement.

The Facilitate for Freedom Fundamentals Training is for you if…

  • You facilitate meetings about decisions, conversations, and processes of collaboration in social justice work.
  • You are ready to reflect on your own group process facilitation practice.
  • You feel full alignment with AORTA’s commitment to move groups that we facilitate towards: deep democratization and collective governance, developing many leaders, building resiliency and healing, the practice of principled struggle.

We welcome you wherever you are in your facilitation journey - beginners and seasoned practitioners alike.

Frequently asked questions

When you say that this is for “facilitators of group process” what do you mean?

When we say “group process”, we mean spaces where a group is meeting to do something together. Make a decision, have a conversation, move through something difficult, design a strategy, take action, etc.

I’m a seasoned facilitator. Can I skip the Fundamentals Training?

Our Fundamentals is not a "beginner's course". We think of Fundamentals like an introduction to us. If you've taken a facilitation training with us in the past, our facilitation pedagogy has evolved and sharpened over the years, so the Fundamentals training will likely hold new learning for you!

I facilitate groups in person, not online. Will the tools apply?

This training is geared towards facilitating online, but we think that many of the tools and approaches will still apply to in-person facilitation!

What if I sign up for the Fundamentals but unexpectedly cannot make it?

We know unexpected life things happen! By registering, you will receive an editable version of the training slide deck to keep and a recording of the training, along with a transcript.

Will I get to practice the tools I’m learning during the training?

This 3 hour training is focused on sharing our pedagogy! While it will have multiple opportunities for participant reflection and engagement, it will not include opportunities for practice and feedback.

Can I use an AI notetaker?

AORTA does not allow AI notetakers into public events. If an AI notetaker joins the waiting room of a public training, they will not be let in. All registered participants will have access to the recording of the training for review.
