Event description

Description

Fabrications is the UK's first festival that celebrates and explores textiles and the textile industry through the eyes of artists. Taking place in galleries, museums and former textile mills across Blackburn, Hyndburn, Burnley and Pendle throughout September.

As part of Fabrications Exchange final weekend programme Creative Lancashire will explore the broader themes of Skills, Migration and Heritage through a series of panel conversations with (and for) industry and professional textiles practitioners.

Speakers include leading textiles artist, Michael Brennand-Wood, Sarah Lloyd (Panaz) and Amanda Odlin-Bates (UCLan Fashion).

Fabrications Themes:

  • Skills: We will consider the impact and influence of the specialist and established skills pertinent to the textile heritage of Lancashire in traditional and current day industries and applications, as well as through the arts.
  • Migration: We look at the global influence of Lancashire through those who came to the area to work with the textiles trade and examine what the dynamic and relationship looks like today. We will look at migration in its broadest sense, including from other areas of the UK, Asia, population movement and all migration.
  • Heritage: In what ways the textiles industry have become part of the DNA of local people, how does it shape their identity, how does it manifest itself now, what are the traces left from the past?

METIS - World Factory (Performance)

Made in China. Sold in Britain. Worn by you.

From the factory floor to the catwalk, from Shanghai to Burnley, World Factory weaves together stories of people connected by the global textile industry. Featuring stunning video and a powerful score, the show gives audiences a first-hand experience of the sharp end of fast fashion. World Factory is being shown in the atmospheric, now-derelict Brierfield Mill, an ex-textile factory that closed in 2010, which played a vital part in Britain’s own textile history. Transportation to and from Brierfield Mill will be provided.
