ABOUT THE BOOK

From the New York Times bestselling author of World of Wonders, a lyrical book of short essays about food, offering a banquet of tastes, smells, memories, associations, and marvelous curiosities from nature

In Bite by Bite, poet and essayist Aimee Nezhukumatathil explores the way food and drink evoke our associations and remembrances—a subtext or layering, a flavor tinged with joy, shame, exuberance, grief, desire, or nostalgia.

Nezhukumatathil restores our astonishment and wonder about food through her encounters with a range of foods and food traditions. From shave ice to lumpia, mangoes to pecans, rambutan to vanilla, she investigates how food marks our experiences and identities and explores the boundaries between heritage and memory.

Bite by Bite offers a rich and textured kaleidoscope of vignettes and visions into the world of food and nature, drawn together by intimate and humorous personal reflections, with Fumi Nakamura’s gorgeous imagery and illustration.

FABC Organizer Highlights:

Jennifer Bañarez

Jennifer Bañarez has also been a FABC team member since 2021, and emcee to previous book gatherings. As one of our Author Outreach coordinators, she helps initiate contact with authors via email and keeps them in the loop with our FABC events.

Jennifer recently moved from snowy Wisconsin to sunny Arizona. She likes working out, watching movies, and of course, reading. Jennifer loves exploring and is game for all kinds of book genres, but has a soft spot for mysteries. When she is not organizing for Filipina Authors Book Club, Jennifer is working on her passion, Filipina American News, which highlights the expertise of Filipinas in all industries. Learn more about it: www.filipinaamericannews.com.

Jacqueline B. Hyman

Jacqueline Hyman joined our team earlier this year. She has been creating our FABC infographics including: 2022 FABC banner, Reading Schedule/Book Picks, Eventbrite graphics, and Reading Goals. Jacqueline has always been a book nerd and is trained as a journalist and English teacher. She is super happy to be adding Filipina/x authors to her reading list through this club! Jacqueline currently works for an education magazine.

Jacqueline created Fil-Am Features, an online publication catering to the Filipino American community in the D.C. area, in 2020. You can check it out at https://medium.com/fil-am-features (although it’s a spare time project, so has been a bit inactive). In addition to the written word and education, Jacqueline is passionate about cooking and baking, music and theatre, sustainability and her sweet, rambunctious kitty. You can find her at @jacqbh58 on Twitter.

Celine Johnson

Celine Johnson joined the FABC team in January 2024. She has been a member since October 2023 and is a regular, upcoming emcee, to most of our FABC events. Celine is a passionate Filipina-American who thrives on bringing people together through literature. As an organizer for FABC, she relishes the opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and diverse voices of Filipino writers. Her love for storytelling and community building drives her to create inclusive spaces where members can share their love for literature, exchange ideas, and foster connections that transcend borders. Celine now lives in Deep East Texas with her husband and works as an Association Coordinator for a variety of associations to plan and coordinates events. In addition to reading, Celine enjoys videography, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.

Vanessa Quiban-Tolentino

Vanessa Quiban-Tolentino joined the FABC team in 2022. She has been a member since the beginning of FABC and is a regular to most of our FABC events. She’s enjoyed being a member of FABC and is excited to give back. Born and raised on Oahu, Hawaii, she also spent her early childhood in the Philippines. Vanessa now lives with her spouse and two children in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to reading, Vanessa enjoys knitting, baking, and the outdoors. You can find out more about her on Instagram @booksnesread.

Kristtina Swilling

Kristtina Swilling has also been a FABC team member since early 2021. She is one of our lead team members and provides us with direction, insight, and ideas for continuous growth, as well as being the liaison with our book club founder. Kristtina has been the emcee for many of our previous 2021 virtual gatherings and continues to fill-in-the-gaps for any additional FABC duties. In addition to creating our FABC Zoom backgrounds, based on your Author Appreciation submissions, she develops a token of appreciation for our authors' generosity, time, and support.
