About this event
You say you know Brooklyn, but have you visited the neighborhood that's part of one of the largest collection of turn-of-the-century Victorian houses in the country? It's time to hit the streets and uncover the incredible sights and stories of one storied community, which is fast becoming New York's premiere destination during Halloween.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the astonishing turn-of-the-century community of Prospect Park South, an enclave within the Brooklyn neighborhood of Flatbush that boasts rows of historic mansions dating back to the 1890s.
Led by neighborhood expert and licensed NYC tour guide Norman Oder, our unique on-the-ground experience will include:
- A walk through the stunning micro-neighborhood of Prospect Park South to see a diverse array of mansions that look anything but "Brooklyn," including the famed "Japanese House," a house restored by a famed movie star, and a house that had a star turn in Sophie's Choice
- Views of three very diverse houses of worship, only one of which was built as such
- A continuation beyond Prospect Park South into the tree-lined streets, with their own impressive houses, of what some call "Ditmas Park" (but you'll learn why that's imprecise)
As a special end-of-October treat, we'll see numerous Victorian houses known for having over-the-top Halloween decorations, taking advantage of their large porches and extensive facades!
See you there!
*Please bring a water bottle and wear a comfortable pair of shoes as we'll be doing a lot of walking!
**The tour will end near the Cortelyou Road stop on the Q train, near where there are various places for snacks.
***This tour does not go inside any of the homes.
About Norman
“In the 1990s, I began leading family/friends on informal tours of Brooklyn. My goal: to lead the type of energetic, interesting tours I’d take myself. After founding New York Like a Native in 2000 with one tour, I’ve added many more neighborhoods, thanks to visitors and my own curiosity. I specialize in Brooklyn and as both a tour guide and journalist am always trying to understand it better.
I’m a licensed New York City tour guide and have long been a member of the Guides Association of NYC.”
