Canada and the US have been global leaders in advancing HIV treatment and prevention interventions to improve the health outcomes of people living with HIV and reducing transmissions. At the same time, Canada and the US are known as global leaders for criminalizing people living with HIV for transmission, non-disclosure and exposure.

We are hosting a structured dialogue between leading interdisciplinary researchers, experts, and people with lived experience, all working at the intersections of research, clinical care, service delivery, public health and criminal justice to discuss setting new research directions to address the quickly shifting landscape of HIV criminalization and advances in treatment and prevention, and public health surveillance technologies.

TOPICS:

Where are we now with HIV treatment and prevention technologies and monitoring?
Current research on HIV criminalization, including: the impacts of criminalization, the role of viral suppression, the ongoing racialization of criminalization, the gendered dimensions of criminalization, service provider perspectives, and intersections with other criminalized issues and communities.
Use of coercive public legislation to manage HIV exposure, non-disclosure and medication adherence, including PrEP adherence and forms of coercion.
Public health monitoring techniques, including molecular HIV surveillance, mandatory viral load reporting, “out of care” watch lists, as well as public health orders & mandated HIV treatment.

Confirmed speaker: Trevor Hoppe, Department of Sociology at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and author of the award-winning Punishing Disease: HIV and the Criminalization of Sickness. Winner of the 2018 Lambda Literary award in LGBTQ Studies, and 2019 ASA Sexualities Distinguished Book Award.
