Exploring Social and Environmental Predictors of Trauma Symptoms in Urban Youth

Traumatic experiences are common among youth, particularly those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and can lead to significant emotional and behavioral challenges. Unaddressed trauma during childhood and adolescence may lead to more severe mental health outcomes in adulthood. While there is extensive research on the developmental impacts of trauma, there is less understanding of the specific symptoms youth experience and the social or environmental factors that may mitigate them.

This presentation will examine the prevalence of these symptoms among youth receiving community-based mental health services. Additionally, we will explore the role of protective factors, such as peer support, youth voice, and perceived safety, in enabling this population to navigate their trauma.
