Exploring Death and Dying in a Meaningful Way is an intense and meaningful one-day workshop grounded in the field of thanatology—the scientific and interdisciplinary study of death, dying, and bereavement. This course is designed for individuals seeking to explore their understanding of end-of-life issues in a compassionate, educational, and reflective environment.

Facilitated by Ligia M. Houben, MA, FT, CPC—a Certified Grief Counselor and Coach, Thanatologist, and Educator—this experience blends academic insight with interactive learning. Ligia taught courses on Death and Dying at Florida International University and Kaplan University, and talks about this issue from the heart. Through experiential exercises, group dialogue, and informative lectures, participants will explore personal, societal, and spiritual dimensions of death and dying.

This workshop addresses the reality that although death is a universal experience, it is often avoided due to fear, cultural silence, or lack of understanding. By confronting these themes directly and sensitively, participants will gain a deeper awareness of their beliefs, values, and legacy.

Learning Objectives:After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role of death in the 21st century
  • Identify prevailing social attitudes concerning death
  • Recognize the emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions of the dying process
  • Compare the belief systems of several religious and cultural traditions, including views on the afterlife
  • Become aware of the different ways grief and bereavement are experienced and expressed
  • Reflect on funeral rituals, remembrance practices, and personal legacy

You will explore topics such as:

  • How society’s denial of death affects our emotional well-being
  • Models of dying and coping (Kübler-Ross, Corr, Doka)
  • The psychological and spiritual journey at the end of life
  • Rituals and funerals as tools for collective meaning-making
  • Personal reflections on mortality, life purpose, and conscious living

This is not a clinical training. It is a human and educational experience that invites you to expand your awareness, deepen your compassion, and embrace the cycle of life with intention.

Join us for a transformative day of presence, insight, and growth.

Light lunch and two snacks are included. A printed workbook will also be provided.
