By 2050, the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam (MRA) aims to become an international economic engine within the Netherlands. This means it must add thousands of businesses, increase its housing stock and expand high-quality infrastructure to support almost 3 million people. Many of these investments will be exposed to climate risks, which are changing with a high degree of uncertainty. Hence, future urban planning must become increasingly mindful and forward-looking to manage these stresses.

This online workshop will explore and co-create future urban planning directions for the MRA (beyond 40 years). The Resilience Lab at the TU Delft has developed a comprehensive land-use modeling framework for the MRA to simulate future growth. The framework has the potential to integrate climate risks systematically and, more importantly, visualise its spatial impacts across different areas within the MRA to identify the most and least resilient regions for investing. Understanding the long-term spatial implications of climate on land use offers essential evidence for better urban planning decisions.

In a 2 hour online workshop, we would like to hear your inputs on different urban planning policies for the MRA - including what is currently being discussed or any new ideas that you may have. This will include discussions on sectoral strategies, water management, landscape policies, infrastructure development, climate adaptation, zoning, and other themes you deem suitable. We will gather these inputs to intensively synthesise these growth alternatives for the MRA and test the impacts of climate risks on each alternative. The final objective for our project is to arrive at climate-resilient planning pathways that present evidence for long-term planning for the MRA.
