"Expansions"

Overview

An evening of music for 2026.

The Foundry is proud to present a one-night performance of Expansions, a sonic happening that heralds the start of the new year. The concert features singer and composer Shira Laucharoen, who will share innovative and original musical theater inspired works, written within the past five years. Violinist Pranav Swaroop will bring genre-defying soundscapes to the show, playing traditional Indian melodies that merge with eclectic rhythms.

“‘Expansions’ welcomes us to 2026 with a moment of boundary-pushing musical concepts, fresh melodies and lyrics, and eclectic arrangements,” said Laucharoen. “It’s our hope that audiences will leave the space with broadened mindsets, during a time that feels politically full of limitation.”

Laucharoen is an artist of Thai and Italian descent from Somerville, originally born in New York City. Her work often deals with contradictions in authority, romantic themes, and bringing the past to life. She will be joined by cellist Sophie Paul, who also performs with ensembles including the Venus Quartet, Beacon Ensemble, Vibrant Matter Collective, and the Apollo Orchestra. Singer Clara Hevia will also make an appearance. Swaroop, who was born and raised in Bangalore, will be accompanied by his bandmates, Shivaraj Natraj, a beatboxer, and another musician on the keys. They bring together the soul of Indian classical music and the pulse of electronic music. Honored last year as one of WBUR’s 2024 Makers: 10 Artists of Color Making an Impact, Swaroop envisions music that bridges worlds, meditative yet dynamic, timeless yet futuristic.

The Foundry is Cambridge’s inclusive hub for creative exploration. The organization offers a venue where equity, belonging, and access come together to cultivate a vibrant community that empowers people to imagine boldly, freely invent, and grow. During Expansions, Thai restaurant BoonNoon Market will be on site, offering bites and non-alcoholic beverages.
