Join us for a fun time exploring the modern day ghost town of Frick's Lock Village. In honor of the 200th Anniversary of the Schuylkill Navigation System, the Society is planning this year’s annual excursion to Frick’s Lock Historical Site, once a bustling little village on the Schuylkill Canal. Following the tour, we will provide a light lunch at the on-site pavilion.

While a few buildings date to the Revolutionary War, Frick’s Lock Historic Site became a vibrant little village as a result of the building of the Schuylkill Navigation System in the 1820s. This village along the Schuylkill River was the site of one of the 120 locks along the river between Philadelphia and Port Carbon used to transport coal and other goods up and down the Schuylkill River. Before the railroads and highways, the river was THE way to move much needed coal and other goods.

During the construction of the Limerick Nuclear Power Generating Station located on the opposite bank of the Schuylkill River, PECO acquired all the land around the station site, which included Frick’s Lock Village. In an effort to preserve the property and its history a well as his family’s legacy, Paul Frick succeeded in getting the property being listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 2003.
