Examples From the Field: Project CHECKERS -
Novel Community-Engaged Research for Head and Neck Cancers
Advancing Community-Engaged Research Practices at Duke and Beyond
Project CHECKERS (Community Head and NEck Cancer Knowledge, Engagement, Research and Screening) is to our knowledge the first community-engaged head and neck cancer (HNC) screening and cancer prevention education project in North Carolina. Short-term, Project CHECKERS aims to establish a community partnership that fosters characterizing knowledge of HNC and risk factors in a disparate community in North Carolina through screenings. Long-term, Project CHECKERS will provide evidence of benefits of tailored HNC screening programs in improving prevention and early cancer detection and positively impact overall survival in high-risk individuals with limited access to care.
Join us virtually on Friday, June 27, 2025 from 12 Noon – 1 pm Eastern
By attending this session, you will:
- Learn how researchers are working with immigrant faith communities using community-engaged research in the prevention and early detection of head and neck cancers through Project Checkers (Community Head and NEck Cancer Knowledge, Engagement, Research and Screening).
- Hear real-world examples of how research teams collaborate with community faith-based partners, such as the North Raleigh International Baptist Church, to provide outreach to seven nationalities and integrate community-engaged research approaches.
- Discuss the importance of integrating mutual benefits of community-centered approaches with community-engaged research principles and methodologies to improve health and health equity in the immigrant community.
