EWRI - San Antonio: Tour and December Lunch & Learn

By EWRI - San Antonio

Overview

Join us for a tour to see permeable pavers in action at Classen-Steubing Ranch Park followed by a Lunch & Learn at Stone Werks

Summary: For our tour at Classen-Steubing Ranch Park, we will begin with a site visit at 10:30 AM in the parking lot to see where permeable pavements were installed in four parking lots within the park. The topic of discussion will be "Demonstrating the Benefits of Permeable Pavements over the Edwards Aquifer" presented by Dr. Marcio Giacomoni, PhD, P.E. of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

Dr. Giacomoni will discuss the recently concluded project that evaluated the hydrologic and water quality performance of four types of permeable pavers. The permeable pavements were installed in four parking lots in the Classen-Steubing Ranch Park, located in the Stone Oak Area. From August 2023 to May 2024, eleven rain events were monitored, and water samples were collected for permeable interlocking concrete pavers (PICP), permeable grid (PGr), permeable asphalt (PA), and permeable concrete (PC)—compared to a conventional impermeable pavement (CP). The project was funded by the Edwards Aquifer Protection Program by the City of San Antonio, with the supervision of the San Antonio River Authority.

Presenter's Bio: Marcio Giacomoni, PhD, P.E. is a Full Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and at UTSA. He joined UTSA in 2013 after receiving a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. He holds a master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering from the Institute of Hydraulics Research of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Brasilia, Brazil. His long-term goals are to develop and sustain a career as a teacher-scholar focused on methodologies that identify resilient and sustainable water management strategies for the built and natural environments, and to transform this knowledge into action by training the next generation of water planners and managers.
