About Syrah

Syrah is renowned for its versatility—ranging from lean, peppery wines in the Northern Rhône to lush, fruit‑forward styles Down Under and elegant, balanced interpretations in the Pacific Northwest. Typical notes include black pepper, blackberry, smoked meat, violet, and dark chocolate. Its structure varies dramatically:

France (Rhône Valley): Cool nights preserve acidity and spice, yielding age-worthy, complex wines.

Washington State: Moderate summers and diverse soils produce Syrahs with pronounced red and black fruit framed by vibrant acidity.

Australia: Sun‑soaked vineyards in Barossa and McLaren Vale deliver full‑bodied, opulent wines with plush tannins and ripe dark‑fruit character.

Why Deductive Tasting?

Deductive tasting is a step-by-step framework that trains your senses to pinpoint a wine’s grape variety, region, and quality level. By systematically evaluating visual cues, aromatics, and structural elements, you’ll gain confidence and accuracy in your wine assessments—especially valuable for a versatile, terroir‑driven grape like Syrah.

Organized by

The concept is simple.

Members are to bring a bottle of wine of their own choosing, whether expensive or cheap, commercial or artisanal, local or of a land far away. We will blindly taste and discuss each wine, collectively expanding our palate and knowledge base.

Membership is free (other than a bottle of wine).

Class offered every Monday, barring any scheduling conflicts, from 6pm until 8:30pm.

We will grab a bite to eat from 6-6:30pm, with a suggested $10 donation to help offset food costs.

6:30-7:30pm will be committed to formal blind deduction and teaching.

7:30-8:30pm will be a speed round with tasting and quick grading of wines brought by class members.

Locations will rotate to various wineries in the East Texas area, with the majority at the convenient central location of Britt’s Winery in Kilgore.

These meetings are open to anyone who wishes to improve their wine tasting skills, however it is important that everyone RSVPs below, so if you are inviting someone new please direct them to this page so that they can be accounted for.
