About this event

Nonprofit community-based organizations (CBOs) are the lifeblood of our neighborhoods. As we’ve seen throughout this pandemic, CBOs are on the front-lines of disaster and the first place people turn to in times of crisis. But skyrocketing rents and a lack of long-term protections threaten to displace CBOs across NYC. We must take bold steps to keep them rooted in the communities they serve - now, and long into the future.

Join Hester Street and our partners for a virtual discussion as we highlight the essential role of CBOs in our city, the challenges we all face in today’s economic landscape, and the transformative power of community ownership. You will hear from:

  • Khary Lazarre-White, Executive Director & Co-Founder, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol
  • Betsy MacLean, Co-Executive Director, Hester Street
  • Arlenis Morel, Chief of Staff, Make the Road NY
  • Antonio Reynoso, NYC Council Member for District 34
  • Greg Schiefelbein, New York Tri-State Director, Citi Community Investing and Development

This event will also mark the release of “Essential and At-Risk: The Power of Community-Based Organizations and the Danger of Displacement”, a Hester Street study featuring new research on CBO displacement, an analysis of NYC’s Capital Grants program, and recommendations for ensuring long-term CBO sustainability.
