Engineering for Resilience: Defeating Ransomware in the Cloud
Overview
Ransomware has evolved into one of the most reliably successful business models in cybercrime. Attackers increasingly bypass traditional defences, move fast once inside, and exploit the fact that most organisations simply can’t rebuild their core systems quickly enough. When operations grind to a halt and data becomes inaccessible, the financial consequences are immediate and severe.
Recent government figures show ransomware attacks have doubled year on year. And while it’s the big enterprises that make the headlines, the reality is that it’s the smaller organisations who get hit the most. In fact, 81% of all UK business that suffer a cyber attack are small and medium-sized businesses.
The costs of these attacks are staggering. In 2024, nearly £200 million was paid out in cyber insurance payments, an increase of over 230% from the previous year. And often, the insurance payout doesn’t cover the costs; M&S’s payout, for example, covered only 25% of the total costs of their ransomware incident.
It’s clear that prevention and detection are no longer enough. Encryption-based ransomware attacks rely on an organisation’s inability to rebuild IT quickly in order to create leverage for extortion. While established cyber security measures remain essential, organisations need to look beyond contemporary security controls to how we engineer for cyber resilience - so that critical services can be recovered at pace following a disruptive cyber intrusion.
In this webinar, we’ll explore the cloud engineering practices that enable you to recover at speed when the unexpected happens. We’ll break down the core principles of cyber resilience in the cloud, giving you the building blocks for a strategic roadmap to improve the resilience of your organisation.
We’ll also walk through a live demonstration of an encryption-based ransomware attack and the corresponding recovery workflow in a real cloud environment, showing exactly how these practices limit damage and shorten downtime. By the end, you’ll have a clear, actionable understanding of how cloud security practices can give your organisation a decisive advantage when facing modern ransomware threats.
