About this event

Tour the final phase of the Mashel River Engineered Log Jam (ELJ) project. Project Manager and Salmon Habitat Restoration Biologist Kylie O’Driscoll from the South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group will lead the tour and talk about the decade-long restoration project to improve habitat for endangered and threatened salmon species. We also hope to view pink salmon swimming upstream as part of the historic run projected for this fall.

ELJs jump-start habitat restoration in salmon-producing rivers where the natural supply of timber has been depleted: Logs are piled up to change the river’s hydraulics, which immediately increases the complexity of pools and riffles and provides sheltered alcoves for juvenile fish until replanted forests mature. Learn more about habitat benefits for salmon species on the walk!

Description:~1.5 miles round-trip hike on uneven ground, some elevation change including steep hill
