Overview

Make this eye-catching and patriotic work of functional art!

Learn how to make a beautiful maple and walnut end grain cutting board that is patterned like the US flag. Students will start with a plain maple and walnut boards, cross cut them to strips, and glue them up to end up with a beautiful end grain cutting board that they will be proud to show off to friends and family. End grain cutting boards have the advantage of holding up over time as opposed to long grain cutting boards. Students will get hands-on experience with several power tools, including the table saw, drum sander, and random orbital sander, as well as instruction on proper safety procedures. The first day will conclude with the field and stripes of flag glued up. After the glue has dried overnight the stars will then be CNC’d into the field and students will return 1 week later to do the finish sanding and apply finish. Stop by the store to see an example and ask Rockler associates about the class.
