This beginning workshop is designed as a way to get you into encaustic painting using abstract marks without any expectations. Suitable for beginning students in encaustic, as well as those who want to expand their use of the media, this class is designed as a relaxing and playful way to work in encaustic painting. Experienced artist and educator Dana Harris Seeger will guide you through her process of creating an encaustic painting and adding abstract marks using materials such as india ink, carbon paper, pastel, gold leaf and much much more.
In an intimate setting, you will expand your encaustic skills by creating in the flow, not worrying too much about an outcome, but experimenting with process and materials. Dana will show you her process of incising into the wax to create luscious grooves and marks that we will rub ink into, intaglio style and then heat set using a heat gun, an iron and a torch. Encaustic has a way of layering that is unlike any other 2-D medium! If you don't like something, paint over it or scrape it off! Each student will go home with an 8x10" encaustic painting.
All materials are covered in the class fee, including the painting substrate, medium, pigments used, brushes, primer and other related materials. You may bring some drawing materials you like, and media you want to try out such as alcohol inks, india ink, acrylic markers and oil sticks.
Students are not required to have any encaustic experience, as this class assumes students are beginners. Check out my video on compatible encaustic materials to see what you can use (this only scratches the surface!)
