Embodied Resistance: Breath of Sumud

The gathering is centered on self and collective care as acts of resilience and resistance. Empire and colonization sever our relationships to self, body, land, community, and breath—forcing us into survival mode. This event seeks to reclaim the breath as a decolonial practice: an embodied pathway back to connection, rootedness, and liberation.

We are honored to be guided in this experience by Nama Khalil, PhD, an anthropologist and trauma-informed wellness practitioner who utilizes breath-work, art making, and reflective journaling to lead participants through a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Dr. Khalil’s work centers justice, healing, creativity, and curious compassion across all ages and spaces—whether teaching in the classroom, playing with her children, or empowering clients, she is gently planting seeds for transformation. Rooted in the Prophet Muhammad’s teaching that nothing will change until we change the conditions of our hearts, Dr. Khalil invites us to pause and notice, to think and reflect, to trust and act.

We kindly request that you consider making a Donation:
Donations are on a sliding scale to support Baladna’s mission of community building and to allow others who are unable to pay to attend—an act of paying it forward in collective solidarity.

This will be a women-only event .

Our program will include:

Opening Grief Circle
We begin by coming together in a shared space of tenderness — to name, hold, and process our collective grief.

Guided Breathwork Journey
Led by Dr. Nama Khalil, this session invites us to reclaim the breath as a sacred act of connection a way to regulate our nervous systems, to resist fragmentation, and to return to the body as a site of healing and power.

Closing with a Tarweedeh
We will close by lifting our voices together in a tarweedeh — a traditional Palestinian song of Sumud.
If you have a tarweedeh that carries meaning for you or your family, we invite you to share it with us ahead of time, so we may include it in our closing.

Tea & Snacks
We’ll share tea infused with wild foraged sage from the hills of Palestine, among other fragrant varieties, accompanied by light snacks — a moment to ground, connect, and continue our reflections together.

What to bring:
Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat, a pillow, and a throw blanket to ensure comfort and grounding during the breathwork session.
