Embedding Native Values into your Business through Sustainability and Sustainable Procurement Program
A partnership between the Northwest Native Chamber (NWNC), Portland State University (PSU), and the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC) is offering a unique training opportunity for Native-owned and Native-serving businesses in Oregon and Washington who want to develop, refine, and implement sustainable procurement practices.
We’re looking for 60+ Native-owned or Native-serving businesses of all sizes–with a focus on small to medium-sized–to join this free program. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to refine your current sustainability practices, this program is for you! Visit our program website to learn more.
Program Details

- September 9 Kick-Off (Virtual): Meet the program team!
- Three self-paced modules: Hosted on NWNC’s virtual platform that help businesses develop their own sustainability program
- Weekly Office Hours: Optional support from the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC) during the virtual modules
- In-person Workshop (October 8 and 9): Hands-on coaching sessions that apply information from virtual modules into their own sustainability and sustainable procurement business plan
- Facilitated by a representative from the Institute for Tribal Government
- Peer Learning Circles: Three optional monthly PLCs for continued support after the workshop
Logistics and Support
- The coaching workshops coincide with NWNC’s the gathering on Oct 9
- Stipend: $500 per participant to complete the virtual modules and attend the full 2-day in-person workshop. If additional support for travel, missing work or other circumstances it can be arranged.

- Northwest Native Chamber: Northwest Native Chamber is dedicated to transforming the economic landscape for Native and tribal people in the Northwest by providing technical assistance services to businesses.
- Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council: The Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council is a global community of purchasers, suppliers, advocates, and experts with the goal to build a sustainable world through the power of procurement.
- Institute for Tribal Government (PSU): The Institute for Tribal Government arranges and facilitates ongoing training, professional development, and consulting service programs for tribal and non-tribal organizations nationwide.
- Community Environmental Services (PSU): Community Environmental Services is a research and service unit of PSU that provides technical assistance and research for partners looking to minimize their waste.
Frequently asked questions
The virtual kickoff for this course will take place on Tuesday, September 9th and conclude in two days of in-person sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, October 8th and 9th. There will also be weekly office hours offered throughout the course.
While this course includes three self-paced modules for participants to manage their own time, the course will officially begin with a virtual session on Tuesday, September 9th AND conclude with two, in-person sessions on October 8th and October 9th.
