Educator Workshop: Hemlock Monitoring and Stewardship

Educator Workshop: Hemlock Monitoring and Stewardship

By Gulf of Maine Research Institute

Overview

Join educators, scientists, and conservation professionals from across the northeast supporting youth in forest research and stewardship

Hemlock trees shape forested ecosystems by providing dense shade, protecting streams from harmful runoff, structuring complex soils, and providing habitat to a diverse range of species. They are also threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid, a forest pest that is spreading across the Northeast as the winter warms. Through Project Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, youth can provide crucial data for the preservation of this iconic species.

In this workshop, we will hear directly from scientists, resource managers, and educators leading hemlock protection efforts, practice protocols that students can use to monitor Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, explore data tracking the spread, and plan projects students can take on to protect local forests.

This session is for anyone interested interested in helping youth engage in forest stewardship, including:

  • classroom teachers, out of school educators, and conservation professionals
  • People new to hemlock trees and those who have contributed to project Hemlock Woolly Adelgid for years

Resources included this FREE training:

  • Adaptable NGSS aligned curriculum resources to support science learning through participation in project Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
  • Resources and hands on training to support species identification, conducting protocols, and data entry
  • Opportunities to connect with a broad network of science professionals and community members working to protect hemlock forests
  • Coffee and lunch
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • Substitute teacher reimbursement if necessary
